Towards a universal ion source: Glow Flow mass spectrometry

چکیده
A helium-microplasma ion source (Glow Flow) has been developed and characterised. It is engineered to be a simple design, of low-cost can readily retrofitted most modern mass spectrometers. Initial assessment its performance shown it robust, reproducible high sensitivity. Glow Flow provides broad non-specific detection samples from polar through non-polar chemistries making wide utility. study persistent organic pollutants, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, low average-molecular-mass polymers (polyethyleneimine, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol) complex mixture fatty-acid methyl esters by direct sample introduction using nebulised heated nitrogen flow was conducted. The ability make quantitative measurement investigated stearate linear calibration plot gave R2 = 0.999 limit-of-detection ∼100 fmol. This design extremely stable, in operation. Typical ions commonly observed are intense protonated molecule ions, radical molecular hydride abstracted oxygen adduct ions. At present this system valuable apply small analysis (m/z < 1000), easily interfaced gas liquid chromatography, likely useful for imaging.

A glow discharge (CD) ion source has been coupled to a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer using a four-element electrostatic lens to accelerate and focus ions generated external to the instrument's high magnetic field into its analyzer cell. Like other CD mass spectrometers, GD-FT-ICR can provide a quantitative measure of bulk analyte concentration with good pr...

At ANSTO we have developed an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source to investigate new concepts for mass spectrometers designed to measure isotopic ratios of elements such as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. The low pressure ECR plasma presents particular challenges when used for mass spectrometry. The elements we are interested in measuring are typically present as residual gas in vacuum s...
متن کاملIon Balance Mass Spectrometry
We have developed a technique to simultaneously compare the cyclotron frequencies of two single ions to obtain atomic mass ratios with fractional accuracies at or below 10−11. Much like a balance scale, this two-ion technique cancels many sources of noise and error – chief among them magnetic field noise. The new mass comparisons are used in combination with γ-ray wavelength measurements, perfo...
